SOCOTRA ISLAND

Socotra (Arabic: سُقُطْرَى‎ Suquṭra), also spelt Soqotra, is a small archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean. The largest island, also called Socotra, is about 95% of the landmass of the archipelago. It lies some 240 kilometres (150 mi) east of the Horn of Africa and 380 kilometres (240 mi) south of the Arabian Peninsula.The island is very isolated and through the process of speciation, a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as the most alien-looking place on Earth. The island measures 132 kilometres (82 mi) in length and 49.7 kilometres (30.9 mi) in width.
Socotra is part of the Republic of Yemen. It had long been a part of the 'Adan Governorate, but in 2004, it became attached to the Hadhramaut Governorate, which is much closer to the island than 'Adan (although the nearest governorate is Al Mahrah).

Pulau terbesar, yaitu pulau Socotra, merupakan sekitar 95% daratan dari kepulauan tersebut. Pulau itu terletak sekitar 240 kilometer (150 mil) ke arah timur dari  Tanduk Afrika dan 380 kilometer (240 mil) ke selatan dari Arab Peninsula. Pulau ini sangat terpencil dan melalui proses spesiasi, sepertiga "tanaman" yang hidup, tidak ditemukan di tempat lain di bumi ini. Pulau ini telah digambarkan/dinyatakan sebagai tempat yang paling asing yang tampak di Bumi. Pulau ini berukuran panjang 132 kilometer (82 mil) dan lebar 49,7 kilometer (30,9 mil).

Socotra merupakan bagian dari Republik Yaman, dan telah lama menjadi bagian dari 'Adan Governorat(Provinsi 'Adan), tetapi pada tahun 2004, menjadi bagian Governorat Hadhramaut(Provinsi Hadhramaut), yang jauh lebih dekat dari Pulau Socotra (meskipun Governorat/Provinsi terdekat adalah Al Mahrah).
